96 Points – Huon Hooke
When it comes to Australian winemakers, few are as esteemed as John Duval. Appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986, Duval was the custodian of Penfolds Grange for almost 30 years. Establishing his eponymous label in 2003, Duval continues to showcase old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz along with other select Rhone varietals.
The 2021 John Duval Entity Shiraz is another high quality Shiraz that follows in the steps of the hugely popular recent vintages of this wine. Made with the intention of delivering a Shiraz true to the Barossa, this again includes some Eden Valley Shiraz to help maintain the elegance and style of Entity.Â
Approachable in its youth, the 2021 Entity Shiraz offers attractive notes of dark berries and plum supported by hints of licorice and a floral lift. Dark and brooding, tightly wound layers of rich black and blue fruits with hints of dark chocolate and spice, finishing long with savoury tannins.
“96 Points. Intense purple-red colour and a spicy/meaty and dried-herb bouquet, very fragrant for such a big, powerful shiraz, with dried thyme, oregano and mace notes. The palate is powerful, concentrated and the intensity driving and long. There is delicious fruit sweetness and a warming heart to this lovely wine. Great to drink now and for at least 20 years more.”- Huon Hooke, The Real Review, February 2023.Â
“95 Points. Shiraz sourced from old vineyards in the Barossa (Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer and Moppa) and the Eden Valley. Vibrant and pure at heart with deep black plum, black cherry and boysenberry fruits, plentiful exotic spice, violets, licorice and wafts of light cedar and vanillin oak. Impressive fruit depth, sandy tannin support and long, plush finish of spicy black fruits and earth. 14.5% alc. $55. Drink by: 2033”- Dave Brookes, winecompanion.com.au.Â
